As Chicago gears up for the holidays and neighborhoods around the city get into the mood with festive décor, the Art Institute does the same. Every year, the museum’s iconic lions get a holiday makeover. This year, the Wreathing of the Lions will take place on November 27th when oversized wreaths complete with red ribbons will be placed over the lions’ heads to greet guests coming into the Art Institute to spread seasonal cheer.
The party gets going at 10 a.m. that day with a live performance by Funkadesi, an appearance by the museum’s mascot, Artie the Lion, and free hot chocolate for all. The first 50 people in line following the wreathing event will get free admission, and everyone can visit the museum’s Ryan Education Center to make their own holiday wreaths.
Be sure to visit the famous miniature Thorne Rooms and see how they’ve been decked out for the holidays, too. Recognizing various holidays like Christmas and Hannukah, artists have added decorations, trees, ornaments, menorahs and more to various rooms.
