What started in Paris 30 years ago when friends wanted to gather at Bois de Boulogne for a reunion picnic where everyone would dress in white to easily find each other has blossomed into Le Dîner en Blanc, one of the world’s largest, most elegant outdoor dinner parties that takes place annually in an undisclosed location in more than 70 cities around the world.
August 12 marks the fifth anniversary of “the dinner in white” happening in Chicago and, like years past, the location is shrouded in secrecy until shortly before the event happens. All guests are required to dress in all white and bring their own picnic basket with food [wine can be secured on site], table, chairs and table setting and clean up everything they bring in with them. The group, usually thousands of people, sit at the same time, twirl white cloth napkins simultaneously to mark the start of dinner, enjoy dinner then hit the dance floor. It’s one of those things you have to see to believe and it truly is a chic, sophisticated evening under the stars in one of Chicago’s most iconic locations.
