Live theater awaits you in December

Take a break from holiday shopping and wandering around Christkindlmarket and head inside to get cultured. There’s a lot of great theater happening around the holidays. Below is a quick sample of what we’re excited about.

The Nutcracker: Experience the beautiful production at Chicago’s premiere ballet group, The Joffrey Ballet. The Joffrey’s entire company will dance and be joined by children’s choirs and the Chicago Philharmonic performing Tchaikovsky’s score. At the Auditorium Theatre December 4th to 27th.

A Christmas Carol: What holiday season would be complete without the heartfelt tale of Ebenezer Scrooge? The Goodman Theater’s intimate space provides the perfect setting for this holiday adaptation of the cherished Dickens’ novel. At the Goodman Theater (170 N. Dearborn) through December 27th.

Potted Potter: Harry Potter Fans need to get tickets to what should prove to be a hilarious 70 minutes. This parodied unauthorized Harry Potter experience relives all seven books in just over an hour. Runs December 1st to January 3rd at Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 East Chestnut). Tickets available at Broadway in Chicago.

Domesticated: Opening December 3rd, Domesticated is the latest production from powerhouse Steppenwolf. The hilarious play showcases a political power couple entangled in a very public sex scandal. At Steppenwolf (1650 N. Halsted) through February 7th.

Neko Case at the MCA: While not live theater, per se, this event features celebrated indie musician Neko Case in a one-on-one MCA Talk to discuss her life and music. At the MCA December 9th.
