The Sport of Kings Coming to Chicago

Beach Polo Cup at North Avenue Beach

You don’t have to be a socialite, a princess or an heiress and fly off to East Hampton or Monaco to enjoy a riveting polo match. Sure, it’s more fun when you have all that disposable income and hobnob with the jet set, but polo offers plenty of excitement for the common folk (don’t worry, we know you’re far from common!). Sponsored by Qatar Airways, the Chicago Beach Polo Cup welcomes six teams of three co-ed players for a three-day tourney Sept. 9 to 11.

A 300 x 130 foot custom made polo arena will get erected on North Avenue Beach along with grandstands, pop-up shops, a VIP area, a Veuve Cliquot champagne lounge, a wine tasting tent, beer garden and restaurants. VIP tickets, which include a glass of bubbly and reserved seating, cost $115, while general admission cost $65. Festivities run 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Proceeds from the event will benefit Sentebale, an organization founded in partnership between England’s Prince Harry and Lesotho’s Prince Seeiso to aid children in Sub-Saharan Africa affected by AIDS/HIV. Visit the event website for tickets.
