Hello, Fall & Winter: November in Chicago

Lights, pies, Warhol! Fall for these autumnal events to kick off the holiday season.


NOVEMBER 2019 — Weather cools and Thanksgiving, again, finds itself around the corner; Chicago remains a feast not only for the table, but for the soul. With art, foods, and goings-on aplenty, see how our city begins to light up with these must-do’s around town:

Chicago Art Book Fair 
The Chicago Art Book Fair (CABF) returns this November for its third edition. CABF is an experiment in showcasing emerging directions and diverse legacies within small press arts publishing. Relish in over 125 national and international arts publishers, small presses, book artists, comics artists, zinemakers and printmakers, with onsite and satellite programming and after parties.
When: Friday November 15 – Sunday, November 17, 11:00AM
Where: Chicago Athletic Association (The Tank, 1st floor & Stagg Court, 4th floor)

Cocktail Workshop: Holiday Classics 
The holidays are rapidly approaching, and so are comforting drinks to complement the season. In our fifth installation of the Cocktail Workshop Series, Holiday Classics invites guests to spend the afternoon with Cindy’s new Beverage Manager Scotty LoBianco, and learn hands-on how to create festive, cold weather cocktails to recreate at home. To top it all off, The Cheese Board Queen (@cheeseboardqueen) joins us for a live demo where she’ll share her tips and tricks for building the perfect holiday cheese board.
When: Sunday, November 17: Two sessions available from 11:00AM-1:30PM & 1:30PM-3:00PM

Double Feature Screening: Warhol’s “Poor Little Rich Girl” & “Camp” 
Catch a rare glimpse into Warhol’s film legacy and join us in Madison Ballroom for a screening of Camp and Poor Little Rich Girl on 16mm film. Though most known for his screen prints and paintings, film was an integral part of Warhol’s practice, many of which live on as avant-garde classics.
When: November 21Camp (5:30PM-6:37PM) & Poor Little Rich Girl (6:50PM-7:56PM)
Where: Chicago Athletic Association (Madison Ballroom, 8th floor)

Pie In The Sky
Bring a taste of Cindy’s home for the holidays! Cindy’s Pastry Chef Bobby Steckline brings back a Thanksgiving favorite with Cindy’s “Pie in the Sky,” returning this year for a limited time.  Available in Dutch Apple, Chocolate Pecan, Pumpkin Cheesecake and Lemon-Yuzu Meringue flavors, these are sure to be a hit on any table. Preorder required by Monday, November 25. 
When: Tuesday, November 26 & Wednesday, November 27, 3:00PM-6:00PM

Christkindlmarket 
Roasted nuts, spiced wine, music, ornaments, and an unmistakable warmth returns to The Loop in the form of Christkindlmarket.  Begin the fast-approaching holiday season with this authentic German style holiday bazaar that is sure to bring a twinkle to the eye of all ages. Pro tip: don’t forget to snag a specialty souvenir mug — they’re different year to year and perfect for any collection.  Prost!

Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Opening Day 
Lace up those dusty skates and grab a friend, this city favorite is back in action and ready to enjoy this month!  Ring in the winter season and enjoy this “dramatically different” ice rink which boasts an unorthodox path twice the length of a traditional ice rink and of course, take in that breathtaking Chicago skyline view while you do it.
When: Saturday, November 16 (through Spring 2020)

Cost: Free admission, $13/skate rental Monday – Thursday$15/skate rental Friday – Sunday and Holidays 

City of Chicago Christmas Tree Lighting 
Witness the lighting of Chicago’s most iconic tree of the holiday season against the backdrop of Michigan Avenue’s and Millennium Park’s equally iconic architecture.  The program will feature performances from Grammy® Award-winning artist Jonathan ButlerCielito Lindo, a modern Latino Mariachi; and rag doll Eleanor and the elves from Eleanor’s Very Merry Christmas Wish – The Musical.  Stick around for appearances from Santa and Mrs. Claus!

The BMO Harris Bank Magnificent Mile Lights Festival Parade 
Parade Grand Marshals Mickey and Minnie Mouse find themselves in Chicago illuminating one million lights downtown!  The procession will feature spectacular floats, helium-filled balloons, marching bands and top musical performers.  Truly a don’t miss spectacle for the whole family.
When: Saturday, November 23, 5:30PM-7:00PM
Where: Michigan Avenue (from Oak Street to Wacker Drive)

Millennium Park Art Market 
Renowned School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago join forces to kick off your holiday shopping season with one-of-a-kind items, including jewelry, fashion, painting, sculpture, prints, drawings and more on sale by student artists.
When: November 22-23, 11:00AM-7:00PM,  November 24, 11:00AM-5:00PM
