Dog-friendly Winter Romps

Ways to Ruff it With Your Dog This Winter

DECEMBER 2017 – Have you ever seen the sheer joy and excitement a dog exudes when she gets to romp in the first snow of the season — or every snow for that matter? She’ll pounce through it, put her snout down into it and toss snow into the air, trying to catch snowballs. There are plenty of dog-friendly areas around the city you can take your pup for some outside fun, but did you know there are also a bunch of dog-friendly bars? Can you think of a better way to warm up after a snow-filled adventure with your pooch than popping into a neighborhood spot for a beer or a glass of bourbon?

We know you wish you could take your pup everywhere – that’s why we remain a pet-friendly place to stay (with no breed or weight restrictions)! So don’t just take your pup on a quick “business” trip to just turn around and run back in from the cold. Spoil your dog and enjoy some of these great wintertime dog-friendly activities.

ROMP:
If you’re a local, you technically need to get a dog-friendly area (DFA) tag to put on your dog’s collar. Plenty of people don’t do it, but then you’re taking that risk into your own hands. If someone happens to be checking that dog park or dog beach, you could get fined (same with taking your dog off leash, which is also technically a no-no). There are two dozen DFAs around the city so depending where you want to go, you can find one in most neighborhoods.

PLAY:
And by play, we mean drink! During the summer, dozens of restaurants and bars allow patrons to bring their dogs to join them on the patio. But come winter? Those numbers dwindle (stupid health codes!). Fortunately, there are still plenty of bars where you can bring your little buddy including our own Drawing Room on the second floor, GMan Tavern (3740 N. Clark in Wrigleyville), Kasey’s Tavern (701 S. Dearborn in the South Loop), River Shannon (425 W. Armitage in Lincoln Park), Clark Street Ale House (742 N. Clark in River North) and Archie’s Iowa Rockwell Tavern (2600 W. Iowa in Ukrainian Village).

And did you think we weren’t in on the fun? Swing by the Chicago Athletic Association hotel’s Dog Night at Happy’s on Dec. 30. Bring your furry friend to our holiday pop-up bar, Happy’s. Located in The Tank on the hotel’s first floor, the bar is decked out with plenty of treats and quirky holiday cheer, perfect for photo ops.
