Chicago’s August Street Festivals

Hit the streets every weekend in August

We’re in the home stretch of summer so be sure to take full advantage of all that Chicago has to offer. Street fairs and festivals happen every weekend all over the city so whether you’re into ethnic eats, reggae beats or eclectic art, you can find it on the streets of Chicago. Here are just a few of the fests we’re eyeing for August.

Chicago Hot Dog Fest
What: A celebration of all things hot dog! Plenty of hot dog vendors, including Fatso’s Last Stand, Edzo’s, Wiener Take All, Chubby Wieners and, for a lighter touch, YoBerri frozen yogurt, will be on hand. Live bands, interactive art booths, games, speakers and more make this a fun, family-friendly outing.
When: Aug. 5-7
Where: Chicago History Museum at Clark and Stockton in Lincoln Park
Admission: Free to enter

Taste of Andersonville Dinner Crawl
What: The excellent restaurants and bars of Chicago’s Far North Side neighborhood open their doors for a night of eating, drinking and cavorting. Pick either the Salt or Pepper route and try various bites and drinks from the likes of Elixir, Koval Distillery, First Slice Pie Café, Appellation, Pork Shoppe, Vincent and Lady Gregory’s.
When: Aug. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: Along Clark Street north and south of Foster Avenue
Admission: $30 in advance ($35 on site) for either route or $55 for both ($65 on site)

Ginza Holiday Festival
What: A three-day celebration of Japanese culture with folk dancing; drumming; judo; Asian jazz; Japanese wood carving, pottery and other art; bonsai displays; and plenty of food like udon noodles, sushi and chicken teriyaki.
When: Aug. 12-14
Where: Midwest Buddhist Temple, 435 W. Menomonee in Lincoln Park
Admission: Suggested donation of $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students.
Festival Cubano
What: A three-day celebration of the culture, food, music and everything else fantastic about Cuba. Come hear live music, watch cigars being rolled (then smoke one!), check out the classic car show, enjoy carnival rides, play dominoes and eat an array of Cuban cuisine.
When: Aug. 12-14
Where: Riis Park, 6100 W. Fullerton in Belmont-Cragin

Northalsted Market Days
What: Pegged as the largest street festival in the Midwest, Market Days celebrates its 35th anniversary this year with live music from Lez Zeppelin, 16 Candles and Erika Jayne from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. And of course, there will be plenty of eating, drinking and dancing in the street!
When: Aug 13-14
Where: Halsted Street between Belmont and Addison
Admission: $10 suggested donation to benefit the Legacy Project

Reggae Fest
What: A gathering of some of the best reggae artists in the world, including Toots & The Maytals, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Hepcat and Iration for two stages of continuous live music, with food from local vendors and a focus on Caribbean flavors. And, of course, plenty of Red Stripe beer will flow.
When: Aug. 13 from 12 to 10 p.m.
Where: Addams Medill Park at 15th and Loomis in Pilsen.
