SEPTEMBER 2017 – We’re in the final moments of summer — even though as Chicagoans we’ll ward off the start of winter as best as humanly possible. Outdoor patios stay open with heat lamps, convertible tops stay down with the heat cranked and people take advantage of any sunny and somewhat warm day to hit the lake path for a run or bike ride. But before it all gets logged in the history books, we’re looking back at the summer of 2017 through song. Patrick Hatton, our general manager at the Chicago Athletic Association hotel and resident mixtape maker, tapped many of our staff to cull together a “Songs of the Summer” crowd-sourced mixtape (otherwise known as a playlist in modern speak).
The result is a cross-genre, cross-generational collection of hot tunes. Most are from this summer, but some songs, like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” and GnR’s “Patience,” got added because, well, they’re great summer tunes and should be revisited. So join us as we take a deep dive into rock, dance, hip hop, country and more, crank up the speakers and dance like no one is watching.
